The construction industry witnessed a peak in CO2 emissions last year, reaching 10 gigatons. This upward trend raised concerns, prompting an examination of contributing factors. One significant culprit identified is embodied carbon, referring to the CO2 emitted during the production of construction materials. In a standard non-domestic building, this translates to approximately 1000 kgCO2/m2. However, research conducted by Leti, a London-based organization, underscores the necessity of cutting this figure in half to align with Net Zero targets.

The challenge lies in traditional materials such as concrete, plastic insulation, and lime cement render, which pose obstacles to achieving this ambitious reduction due to their high CO2 emissions. Enter KohlenKraft — our materials are a game-changer as they are not just carbon-neutral but actively carbon-negative, offering a sustainable alternative to help the industry meet its environmental goals.

Our goal is to restore the environment by implementing afforestation and adopting sustainable resource management practices. Our strategy involves harnessing the potential of waste biomass as a valuable resource. Through pyrolysis in our dedicated facility, we transform this biomass into biochar, a key component for our products. Simultaneously, this process generates electricity and heating, benefiting the local community.

By returning a portion of our biochar to the natural environment, we contribute to enhancing soil quality and mitigating pollutants. This, in turn, fosters increased biomass growth, creating a self-sustaining cycle that allows us to produce more biochar and amplify our positive impact on climate change.
